Quarkonium Production Studies in CMS
نویسندگان
چکیده
When the LHC starts its operation, CMS will have a unique opportunity to study quarkonium production in pp collisions and later in PbPb collisions. Here we report on the methods and plans for measuring the differential pT J/ψ→ μ μ production cross section, using data to be collected in the first LHC run by the CMS detector. Furthermore we discuss the performance of the CMS detector for quarkonium measurements in PbPb collisions.

Perspectives on Heavy Flavour Production and Spectroscopy Studies at the LHC
In this note we discuss prospects of analyses at the ATLAS and CMS experiments that are related to the production of heavy flavour quarks. Trigger strategies are summarized and a selection of studies is presented. These include quarkonium production studies such as the differential transverse momentum cross section measurement and polarization studies, as well as reconstruction of excited quark...
متن کاملCapabilities of the CMS detector for studies of hard probes in heavy ion collisions at the LHC
The capabilities of the CMS experiment to study properties of hot and dense QCD-matter created in heavy ion collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with the perturbative processes (socalled ”hard probes”) are presented. Detailed studies from complete simulations of the CMS detectors in Pb+Pb collisions at √ s = 5.5 TeV per nucleon pair are presented in view of two hard probes: quarkonium a...
متن کاملQuarkonium Production at Z and in Υ(1s) Decay
The conventional color-singlet model was challenged by the recent data on quarkonium production. Discrepancies in production rates were observed at the Tevatron, at LEP, and in fixed-target experiments. The newly advocated color-octet mechanism provides a plausible solution to the anomalous quarkonium production observed at the Tevatron. The color-octet mechanism should also affect other quarko...
متن کاملHigh-mass dimuon resonances in Pb-Pb collisions at 5.5 TeV in CMS
The measurement of the charmonium (J/ψ, ψ′) and bottomonium (Υ, Υ′, Υ′′) resonances and Z boson in nucleus-nucleus collisions provides crucial information on high density QCD matter. The observation of anomalous suppression of J/ψ at the CERN-SPS and RHIC is well established but the clarification of some important questions requires equivalent studies of the Υ family, only possible at LHC energ...
متن کاملKinematic Enhancement of Non-Perturbative Corrections to Quarkonium Production
In this letter we address issues involved in quarkonium production near the boundaries of phase space. It is shown that higher-order non-perturbative contributions are enhanced in this kinematic region and lead to a breakdown of the non-relativistic (NRQCD) expansion. This breakdown is a consequence of sensitivity to the kinematics of soft gluon radiation and to the difference between partonic ...
